You can't break up with him if you aren't going out with him in the first place,I think if I were in your shoes I would just tell him that you only want to be friends and that you are only looking for friendship.I wouldn't worry if he doesn't want to be friends with you,just be honest because honesty is always the best policy in any kind of relationship.
